Can you propagate mandevilla

Pinterest Facebook Youtube Twitter Instagram. What is the proper way to propagate Mandevilla plant - particularly a red one? Also one of the plants I have potted continues to get yellow leaves.

Too wet? Thank you. Mandevilla Posted by piksihk There are a couple of ways to propagate your red Mandevilla. One is by collecting the seeds, the second is through tip cuttings and the third, which is probably the easiest process is through layering. Stem cutting from mandevilla can be taken in the spring or summer. Choose side shoots inches long and cut them from the plant. Dip the cut ends in powdered rooting hormone and insert them into sandy peat soil. Prepare all the necessary tools and equipment before gathering the cuttings so they can be planted right away.

Fill a 3-gallon nursery pot with a damp mixture of half potting soil and half perlite, leaving the top third of the pot empty. Wipe down the blades of a pair of pruning shears with full-strength disinfectant cleaner before gathering cuttings to prevent the spread of infection between plants. Measure a few tablespoons of IBA rooting hormone powder and place it on a paper plate. Gather several 6-inch-long cuttings of the same thickness as a pencil.

Choose cuttings from vigorous side shoots with mature bark and at least two leaf nodes near the base. Make a degree-angle cut just below the set of leaf nodes using the pruning shears. Remove any mandevilla seed pods, flowers and buds and strip off the leaves from the bottom 2 inches of the cutting. Coat the bottom 2 inches of the cutting with the rooting hormone powder. Each 3-gallon nursery pot can root 10 to 12 mandevilla cuttings if they are spaced 2 inches apart, according to Clemson Cooperative Extension.

Poke a 4-inch-deep hole in the growing medium for each cutting and then stick the cuttings into the moistened growing medium so only the top 2 inches stick up above the surface. Scream is you need further information.

We have over wintered many of ours for several years, one of our favorite plants. I'm just a simple housewife. Post by greenpassion » Aug 23, pm Actually I do mean Datura. I have the kind that has white flowers pointing upright, not hanging. The leaves smell wonderful, like sugar cookies. The flowers smell wonderful as well. As far as my mandevilla question, I guess I'll bring them inside and treat them as a house plant.

Post by Pandora » Oct 06, pm This will be my 3rd year to try to save a Mandevilla from winter. My first attempt was just cut it back and keep at about 50F and lightly water.

My problem here might have been that I had to uproot it to bring in. This year, I left it in the same pot and moved from outside to the garage a couple days, now inside by a South window. I tried rooting in water too. So I am debating whether to leave it at home or bring it into the office before the temp drops anymore.

We should have a few more days at the end of this week to mid next week still in the 70sF, but then I think it's going to drop big time. My Hosta List p Post by kHT » Oct 06, pm Pandora, so sorry to hear you are having so much problems rooting these. Have you tried the air rooting method? Post by John » Oct 06, pm The best idea would be to leave it in its container, and cut it back to about 12" tall. Water only enough to keep it from completely drying out.

Post by Pandora » Oct 07, pm Thanks for the replies. KHT, I am not sure how I would air root, when the stem of the vine is only about as thick as a pencil lead. John, which might be the lesser of 2 evils Mostly cloudy winter by a South facing window with maybe occassional grow light OR to an office with a lots of fluorescent light and occassional South facing window.

Or is this a toss up?? Post by John » Oct 08, am Pandora, the idea is to just overwinter it, not keep it growing, so either one would be fine, wherever you can better spare the room. I'll be experimenting with my gorgeous new red one myself. Post by kHT » Oct 26, pm Pandora, let me try to play with a couple of ours as I had a request for a rooted plant and when I get it all ready I'll post you some photos.

I just got our three into the brug house and stripped so I can see the vines. I have a fourth, the red one I'm planning on bringing inside and keep it growing with Low E windows and we will see how she does. I'm only bring 6 plants inside this year, hopefully this will make the family happy that they aren't living in a jungle.
